Does turning off profanity filter = attempt to escape the filter?
From the EULA:
NC Interactive will not tolerate any inappropriate behavior of any sort in this chat channel. This includes but is not limited to: inappropriate language of any sort or any attempt to escape the profanity filter, inappropriate or vulgar content of any sort, repeated "spamming," or "flooding" of the chat messages channel, or any other conduct determined to be inappropriate by NC Interactive Support, in its sole discretion. Any violation of this term or rules of conduct may, in the sole discretion of NC Interactive, lead to the temporary removal of the character's ability to communicate, the account being suspended for a set period of time, or lead to permanent account closure.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have turned off the profanity filter should you be banned per this section of the EULA. ANY ATTEMPT to escape the profanity filter has to include turning it off. Being too literal? Can we make that kind of decision regarding the EULA? Should ANET/NCSOFT clarify? What do you think?
IMO this needs to be cleared up by NCSOFT/ANET. The ability to break the EULA should not be in the game.

it means writing a bad word in such a way that even if people turned on filters, they will still see it.
Example : if "the word Crazy" is offensive and filtered,
writing it :"Cr4.zzy" or KrazzzY" is considered even more offensive.

Semantics can be in the eye of the beholder. What you read one way I may read another. I think if you take the general meaning of the sentence it means the intentional attempt to bypass the filter.

Come on, aren't there any interesting stuff to start a topic on? Of course you won't get banned when you turn the filter off.
Escaping the filter means you deliberatily try to get around the filter, you know, when you type a message, at the sending part. It doesn't mean the ability to allow obscenities to be viewed on the recieving end when you turn the filter off.

There are always abilities to break the EULA. Chatting for one. One can be scammed using the Trade Button. One can grief by Zranking someone's corpse....

"Does turning off profanity filter = attempt to escape the filter?"
No. Purposely mis-spelling a "naughty" word to bypass the filter does.

Ironically, this is more-or-less how laws in real-life are interpreted. See: DMCA; also, the twisting of child pornography laws to encompass sexting teens as "production and distribution" of kiddie pr0n.

You can write any swear word correctly in chat, but if you write it differently, you're getting nicked. It's weird, but that's the way it is. Maybe it's Anets way of teaching us proper grammar?

I have kept the filter off ever since I checked through the options for the first time when I started playing Guild Wars. I like to see what people write and am not offended by swearing.
Now what I find interesting is that when I see someone swearing in a pug, they almost always write it so that it goes around the filter. Why do they bother doing that? Is their chat filter on by default and they haven't figured out how to turn it off? Do they take extra time on writing naughty words differently just so that others who keep the filter on gets to see them?
Whatever the case may be, it just looks silly to me.

^This.
I don't believe most players are insulted to the point of tears if they see a few colorful words.
I do know that most players are more insulted by the way the words are used: as insults, spamming to be annoying, ect.
The filter is in place to catch those stray 'bad words.'.
/report is there for the others that abuse the whole sentence....

I agree, it's not the words themselves, it's the intent of the words.

I agree. But why should we be allowed to turn off the filter? If you turn it off you can use profanity and will get banned for it. Profanity not allowed by the EULA. By extension turning it off bypasses the filter and should get you the same penality.

"Bypassing the filter" refers to you bypassing someone else's filter. Like you swear in chat, but you misspell your swearing with the intent of bypassing my filter so that I can see what you are typing.
Bypassing your own filter is sort of a moot point since you probably (hopefully) know what you yourself are typing.

Bypassing=/=Turning off Filter. It's only on your screen. If you turn off the filter only you can see the swearing. You turning it off does not affect the other players. You taking a work like sh-- and typing it like S H - -, then you have bypassed said filter. This is grounds for a ban. You having it turned off to see people say sh-- in a way that the filter would catch it is not against the EULA.
Also, as Trub said, you are just being silly now. Trying to discuss something that only you think is messed up is going to go badly.

Turning off the filter only affects what you read. You can't be held accountable for something someone else says.
"Attempting to bypass the chat filter" is a direct reference to what you say (type). And you can be held accountable for that.

I tried to find a lolcat saying "UR logics are flawed" but I could not find any.
So just imagine one.
Ahem, it means TO GO AROUND THE FILTER. That is, regardless if you have the filter active or not, to write in a manner that your profanity would bypass the filter.
That rule doesn't those that read what others write, only those that write.
I have to turn off the filter because there are many words that are just normal in Spanish, but coincide with profanity in English, like "nigro", that is just short for "nigromante".

I will admit that it has been a very long time since I have had my filter on. I seem to remember that way back when that if I had my filter on and I would type a "bad" word it was filtered going out once I hit enter and it would show up (regardless if the receiver had his filter on or off) as ****
However there is still the question of why have the ability to turn off the filter since it is against the EULA to have profanity?

very possible that my understanding of how the filter operates is incorrect!
